A lesson from cleavage college
Sitting in the sunshine outside a country pub, I caught a snippit of conversation from the table behind me. Two couples were talking about local schools:
Wife 1 – “… and the way the girls dress! We just couldn’t believe it. It’s like ‘cleavage college’…”
Wife 2- “and the boys don’t seem to bat an eyelid, do they? It’s not like the older men, who would be oggling all day”
Wife 1 – “well, the kids all have the internet now don’t they. The boys have seen everything already”
And I wouldn’t argue with this logic.
I’m not making a case for schoolchildren watching hardcore internet porn. But they do, and so do ‘the older men’. And generally speaking, which group displays the more mature outlook towards sexuality, and which group continues to oggle and get obsessed?
Looking ahead, perhaps there’s some positivity to take from this.
An important distinction needs to be made between desensitization towards sex and sexual maturity. As a sex therapist I can tell you that the increase in sexual desensitization amongst younger generations is not helping them to enjoy their sexuality more.
That’s a valid and interesting point. But I’m not so sure that today’s abundance of porn is leading to wholsesale sexual desensitization of our kids.
