The risks of following porn links - JL's story

I don't often discuss the problems associated with illegal or underage porn on this site. I generally look upon it as a different issue. The vast majority of people who struggle with porn addiction, including those with the most relentless habits, do not stray into illegal pornography territory. It just doesn't work like that.

Sadly, the tabloid media often treats anyone who stuggles with porn as a potential internet paedophile. I strongly resent this cheap misconception, of course.

In this story, JL describes how his interest in porn led to horrendous consequences. By posting it here, I'm not making excuses for people who access illegal porn and I'm sure JL isn't either. But it is a welcome message of caution, and a valid warning for anyone whose porn habit might be driving them to push the boundaries of legality.

Please think of the consequences when viewing porn, and the trouble it can cause.

I have lost a lot since 2007. My partner, job, self respect from others and a lot of other things.

When you view some porn sites, these links can open up with illegal porn material. Even though you may not have intended to go there, it's then too late and the site is saved on your hard drive. Also, the internet provider keeps all the information of all the sites you have viewed. This can be traced back to you and be possibly investigated and monitored by the police.

The reason why I bring this up is that it's too late for me.

I have been charged with possession of underage porn and am now awaiting sentencing and could be facing jail and all the tabloid attraction (and believe me, they do write lies to make it sound worse than it is). In the most serious of cases this can lead to danger, your house being vandalised, personal attacks or even worse.

Please think about what I say and the dangers. Sometimes it's hard to tell what age these people are on these porn sites and if they are over 18. The internet is a dangerous place and you are never alone.
