Pornography is a waste of time!

Hello all!

I just joined here and I'm pleased to read all these things being talked about in an honest way!

I'm a 58 year old man whho had to give up work due to health problems a few years ago. I'm married and try to keep myself busy but am often at home on my own and too much time can be wasted looking at pornography on the computer. I would not call myself very addicted to pornography (haven't sold the family heirlooms to pay for it or felt myself attracted to people in rubber masks!). But it is a waste of time when I am not getting any younger and I'm looking for ways to stop.

I haven't looked at pornography so far this week and I think this forum will help keep me this way. That's the idea anyway!

Welcome!

Hi ironsides and welcome!

You highlight a very valid point. Porn addiction can lead us into extreme problems, but not everyone needs to hit some kind of rock bottom before they start looking for help and support. Far from it. A lot of people are simply fed up with the amount of time it takes up, and feeling no better for it afterwards.

Let us know how things go!

Porn Procrastination

Hi Ironsides,

I think that your experience is very common indeed. The internet is a fabulous time-waster, with or without porn. Some of us are simply hopping from site to site - news, movies, sports and 'that porn site I like'. Once there we spend time looking for a good movie or image and before we know it, another hour has gone.

It can feel very frustrating that time is passing in this way since we like to feel productive. I imagine that having given up work due to your health problems, you feel better when you've accomplished something during the day than when it vanishes due to time wasting.

One question to ask yourself is whether you're trying to never look at porn again, or simply cut down. If the former, I would think that a blocker would be successful in your case. If you're only trying to cut down, then the key might be to make yourself more busy - perhaps try dividing your days up into half hour chunks and planning to do something in each one.

Thanks for sharing your story on the forum.

Hello Jason and Nathan, and

Hello Jason and Nathan, and thank you!

It is true about the time wasting. Because of my disability I go through a rigmarole in the mornings with my wife helping me to get up. Once all thats over I look forward to the day ahead and tell myself that I'll be good today and wont waste time on porn websites. Does that sound familiar to anyone?!!!

Still don't think there is anything wrong with looking at naked girls now and again. I think the Sun still has a page 3 girl and that never harmed anyone but the internet has made a difference. We used to turn over page 3 and read the rest of the paper but on the computer you just turn over to hundreds if not thousands of other girls. It is addictive! I tried before to only look for half an hour and to only look at nude girls, sometimes this works and sometimes not.

Is there a blocker that you would recommend and how much do they cost? I'm not much good at computers but if it was easy to put on I would try it.

Blockers

Hello ironsides,

I'm not sure if you have Jason's e-book 'Porn Game Over' but at the back there's a list of recommended resources including some blockers. That list includes OpenDNS (available at www.opendns.com) and they offer a basic version for free or more advanced version for $10 per year. You could also change to an ISP that filters for you.

There is a service called Covenant Eyes which I don't think is quite right for you, but can be effective for people with more significant problems. This service relies on a support partner and emails them reports of the content you've been viewing. As I say, I don't think this is right in your case.

One other tool that you might find useful is a Time Tracker and I know you can get one from Mozilla if you use the Firefox browser. It is a helpful tool if you find yourself losing time more generally on the internet as you start to see how many hours are lost each week to YouTube and Facebook!

I wonder if anyone else can recommend any tools?
