Hooked on ‘unbelievable variety’ of internet porn – Chicago Sun-Times

I noticed a couple of very relevant points in this feature on becoming addicted to virtual pleasures online.

Firstly, it highlights the seductive convenience and sheer variety that internet pornography offers. To quote one of the recovering addicts interviewed for the report:

“You get satiated with one thing and you move on to the next level of weirdness. I was able to close my office door and take porno breaks as often as I wanted.”

He also mentions the effectiveness of using filtering software as part of a recovery plan. I’m a big advocate of the potential benefits of filtering your internet connection. It’s not the answer to porn addiction, but it can certainly be a great step forward in getting unhooked.

Ron, who uses photographs extensively in his work, has used the software for nearly a year. It blocked X-rated images but “still let me conduct business,” he said.

Ron touches on the need for a clear period of abstinence too; an essential element for any recovery plan.

“There’s a slippery slope element. Just as an alcoholic can’t have just one glass of wine, I can have absolutely no pornography time.”
