The OpenDNS free porn filter just gets better
It’s been over a year since I recommended this filtering service, and I’ve been continually impressed ever since. OpenDNS is completely free, a snap to set up, always fast and filters out a whole load of phishing sites and other internet nasties. Of course, the adult site blocking feature is of most interest to me, and it just works really well.
One recent addition to the service is a nifty little download for users with a dynamic IP address. The only complaint I ever heard was from clients using AOL or other ISPs who don’t provide a fixed address; the filter would work intermittently and couldn’t be relied on. The free IP update tool resolves this problem.
So OpenDNS is a very good idea for anyone working to overcome porn addiction. Yes we can all turn it off when the porn urges are biting, but that’s a little bit of inconvenience. As I’ve said before, that bit of inconvenience can make the difference between lapsing back into habit, or reminding yourself that you don’t really want to go there.
Porn addiction recovery is a lot more that installing internet filters, but they are a resource that no recovering addict should be without. OpenDNS rocks, and once again, no I don’t have any connection or affiliation with them!

yes i followed the tip and used opendns and it helps a lot. i know i could stop using it whenever i wanted, but i got used to the fact that porn is blocked and am not tempted to seek it out.
i set my router AND my computer network settings to use the opendns name servers. i found that is the best way to get it working 100%

I’ve just set openDNS up today and yeah it looks really good. I work from home and need internet access all day, but it goes without saying that I was having some ‘productivity issues’

Being also “somewhat” unproductive these days I did a search an did find “ScubIT.com”.
Seem to work just fine.
OpenDNS, ScrubIT, … whatever, as long as it gives us a little time advantage over the “urge” it’s fine by me.

When using OpenDNS put in a long password that is very complicated. Write the password on a piece of paper and put it somewhere that takes time to get to… it all helps a bit.
For an extra fail-safe only allow your computer to connect to the two OpenDNS IPs for DNS – block connections to all other IPs on port 53 in your router config (usually accessed by going to the address 192.168.0.1 in your web browser). Oh, and use a complex password for the router too.
