SnoopOnMe: a free accountability tool to help beat porn addiction

I'm always on the lookout for new tools to help with curbing unwanted online behaviour, and this one caught my attention a couple of weeks ago.

Little Snoop is a tiny application that regularly captures your computer screen and posts it to the SnoopOnMe website for the whole world to see. To protect privacy, only reduced size images of your screen are displayed on the site, though any pornographic activity would be very obvious. If you work in official secrets or have screenfulls of sensitive financial information, this might not be the tool for you. Latest screen captures flash across the homepage, and registered users can follow other specific users.

This tool is aimed at people wanting to challenge their habit of online procrastination or time-wasting, and I can see how those struggling with pornography can benefit too. As a registered user, you can invite others to join and follow your stream of screen captures. This is a nice feature for engaging your accountability partners.

Like any other software tool or content filter, Little Snoop can't aspire to be a final solution for porn addiction. Of course, it can be disabled with just a couple of clicks. But therein lies its usefulness too - putting self-management firmly in the hands of the user. While your screen is streamed out over the web, there's a layer of peer-pressure and awareness to support your motivation to leave old habits behind.

This service is completely free, and I've yet to spot any catches. The Little Snoop install is open-source code, and the terms and privacy policies are freely available from the website.

I wish the author every success with this project, and it would be great to hear any feedback from you. Visit http://snoopon.me to find out more.

This wouldn't be my first choice of tool I have to say. I prefer not to be snooped upon but would always go for something like OpenDNS as I am making the choice to self censor my own internet content. Its my choice & my personal responsibility nothing is hidden. But perhaps its a case of horses for courses?

Learning to be accountable to

Learning to be accountable to yourself, learning to be responsible for your own choices are the best ways to solve the porn habit & its various dilemmas. I found that choosing to use self censorship which creates a firm boundary between porn & myself is the single most useful tool I've come across. I have chosen to use OpenDNS & now I can use the internet relaxed in the knowledge that I'm unlikely to stray or stumble across inappropriate content because its filtered out or blocked at the highest level of the internet. This keeps me away from sites I may otherwise end up and waste time on. It works for me that's all I can tell you. You have to use what ever practical tools or approaches works for you.
